The Urban League of Rhode Island, founded in 1939, is one of 118 affiliates of the National Urban League, working to build bridges among the races and especially to assist blacks, other minorities and the poor to achieve social justice as well as economic, educational and political equality.
In collaborative work with other agencies, businesses and state government, the Urban League's staff members have accepted the challenge of ensuring that public policies address the needs of the community.

The Urban League works daily with children and youth to enable them to be successful and competitive in workplaces, and to turn away from drugs and crime. The League's youth programs emphasize skill development and self-esteem, teaching youth to be role models for other children.

The Urban Leauge monitors community and societal issues through its Advocacy and Public Policy unit, helping to mobilize people to address problems constructively and efficiently.

Beside these outreach, training, and human services, the Urban League of Rhode Island also sponsors two gala functions which have become its most important social events and fundraisers. At the "Black and White Ball" and the "Corporate Luncheon," the League brings together leaders from the community, government, and other helping agencies.
