Founded in 1974, the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society was inspired by the spirit of the 1960's civil rights movement. Illuminating the contributions that African Americans have made, and the impact they have had in the shaping of our nation. The society is committed to the preservation of art, culture and the role that African Americans have had influencing the history of Rhode Island.

The Black Heritage Society recognizes all African Americans especially the contribution of revoluntionary soliders who demonstrated courage and patriotism for the state and the nation, seeking freedom for our nations and for themselves. Expressive of the historic and uniform role that African Americans have played in our history.

For over twenty years, the Black Heritage society has educated Rhode Islanders and the nation on the African experience by publications, music, plays, exhibits and other informative events. The Gallery and museum opens the gateway to an understanding of African culture with pieces of art works and historical artifacts. Concentrating primarily on the history of Rhode Island, also including Africa, the Caribbean Islands and Cape Verde Islands.

For the upcoming year the Society has established an ongoing calender of events which included exhibits, forums, tours, book signings and Gala commemorating the historical and social implications featured in the film Amistad.
