Julia Jordan-Zachery, Director of Black Studies
Celebrating
15yrs of Black Studies at Providence College
The Black Studies Program at Providence College, established in 1994, provides
a foundation for understanding the experiences of peoples of
African descent at the local, state, national and global levels.
While we are a relatively small program, we benefit from a
rich history. This year we will continue to build on the basic
tenets that promoted the creation of the program. As such we
will focus on community building and fostering a climate of
intellectual curiosity and vitality.
With a focus on learning, cooperation and activism, we continue
the tradition of fostering relations across academic areas,
such as Women’s Studies, Global Studies, Political Science,
History, and Sociology, among others. Our efforts will also
include incorporating the wider Providence community. It is
with this collaborative effort that we can EXPAND BOUNDARIES
and CREATE KNOWLEDGE.
We encourage you to join us this year as we celebrate our 15th
anniversary. Our program is varied and includes, for example,
an Africana Studies Colloquia series, co-sponsored by Brown
University and Rhode Island College, a discussion on children
and war and the presentation by Tres Vidas Dance Group.
