Statement Regarding Score Choice
Since both the SAT and ACT offer a Score Choice option, the Office of Admission has released the following statement to clarify Providence College's use of standardized test scores.
Providence College is a test-optional institution. Submission of standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) is optional for all students applying for admission. This test-optional policy allows each student to decide whether they wish to have their standardized test results considered as part of their application for admission. Candidates who apply to Providence College without submitting test scores will receive full consideration for admission and merit scholarships.
For students who submit their test scores, Providence College considers the highest score received on each section of the SAT, and the highest ACT composite score.
If a student has taken the SAT multiple times, the Office of Admission will automatically update the student’s application file to reflect the highest Critical Reading, Math, and Writing scores.
If a student has taken the ACT multiple times, the Office of Admission will automatically update the student’s application file to reflect the highest ACT Composite Score.
The number of times a student has taken the SAT or ACT is not taken into consideration during the review.
As a test-optional institution, we encourage students to submit the information they believe provides the best representation of their academic performance and potential. Therefore, students who wish to submit SAT or ACT scores may use the Score Choice option when applying to Providence College.
The review for admission at Providence College has always been holistic in nature and considers a number of different factors.
The Committee on Admission weighs each student’s academic record (evidenced by the strength of the curriculum and the grades received), the extracurricular profile, the required essay, two letters of recommendation and any other information that a candidate chooses to share. The consideration of academic preparation and the personal fit to Providence College is essential in our effort to shape each entering class. SAT/ACT scores are an additional piece of information that some students will share with the admission committee, but these scores will not outweigh a student’s four-year high school performance.
