Tips on Working in the Campus Computer Labs

Turning On the Lab Machines

When you first turn on a lab machine, you will see a Novell Netware login dialog box. If you have a Providence College Network Account, enter your User Name and password. Otherwise, enter your User Name as labuser and do not enter a password. Just click on OK.

Logging Off the Network

Each time you finish working using the network, you must remember to log off. To log off, either shut down Windows 95 and turn off the machine or select Start|Shut Down|Close all programs and log on as a different user and replace your User Name with labuser.

It is important that you remember to log off each time you finish using the network. Failure to log off will allow the next person using the machine to access your private network directory and will preclude you from accessing the network at a later time.

Making a Student Internet Disk

You can make a new student internet disk by selecting Internet Disks from the PC menu. Access the PC menu by clicking on Direct Access Menu from the Windows 95 Start bar. From the Internet Disks menu selection, select Make ACL Inet Disk. Press F10 twice to return to Windows 95.

Printing in the Computer Labs

When you begin working in any software package, select File |Print from the program's main menu and select the printer which corresponds to the printer you intend to print to. If you do not selet the proper printer, you may be unable to view certain fonts or graphics in your documents or may send your print jobs to another printer clear across campus.

Can't Find Your Bookmarks

Using Netscape 3.X

1. Open Netscape with your student Internet disk in the A: drive. It has to be in there when you start up Netscape. If you sit down at a machine and Netscape is already running, you need to close it and restart it with your disk in the disk drive.

2. Now check your bookmarks. If you still don't see yours, do step 3. through 6. Note that if you did not follow step 1. above and thus did not have your own bookmark file open from your floppy disk when you saved them in the first place, they won't be in the bookmark file on the disk now.

3. Select Bookmarks|Go to Bookmarks from the Netscape menu.

4. Select File | Open from the Netscape menu.

5. Switch to the A: drive and highlight the file BOOKMARK.HTM. Make sure it is the bookmark file from the A: drive and not the C: drive.

6. Click on Open and you should see your own bookmarks. If you don't see them, bring your disk to the Help Desk on the first floor of Accino.

Using Netscape 4.0

When using Netscape 4.0, the default bookmark file on the hard drive of the machine you are working on will be used. To save and use your own bookmarks, perform the following steps (Note: If you do not follow these steps to open your personal bookmark file, any bookmarks you save will be saved ONLY on the hard drive of the machine you are working on and will not be available to you when you work on another machine later on.):

1. Click on Bookmarks on the Netscape tool bar (next to the Location box).

2. Click on Edit Bookmarks in the bookmarks dialog box.

3. If you want to save your bookmarks on your student internet disk in the A: drive, select File|Open Bookmark File from the menu in the bookmarks dialog box, highlight the file bookmark.htm on the A: drive and click on Open.

If you want to save your bookmarks in a bookmark file stored in your student network directory, you must first create a bookmark file in your network directory by copying the bookmark file from your Student Internet Disk in drive A: as follows:

A. selecting File|Open Bookmark File from the menu in the bookmarks dialog box

B. highlighting the file bookmark.htm on the A: directory/drive and clicking on Open

C. selecting File|Save As and save the file bookmark.htm to your G:\YOURLOGIN directory (where YOURLOGIN is your network login ID.

Every time you sit down to use Netscape after that, perform steps 1. and 2. above and then select File|Open Bookmark File from the menu in the bookmarks dialog box, highlight the file bookmark.htm on the G:\YOURLOGIN drive and click on Open.

If you have any other problems, contact the Help Desk at ext. 4357 or see your professor.
