1. Calendar changes: The course calendar and assignments are subject to change per my directives in class or via messages or postings in Angel. You are responsible for being aware of changes even if you are absent for any reason.

2. Attendance: PERFECT attendance is expected at class; when you signed up for this summer course(s), you were aware of the schedule and time commitment. Because these are compressed summer sessions, one class equals more then one week of regular semester classes. Class discussion and assignments will form the basis for the majority of the learning in this class, it will not be possible to recreate the class discussion for individuals who miss class, nor will I provide make-up quizzes; the lowest quiz grade will be dropped in lieu of make-ups. If you miss multiple classes, REGARDLESS OF THE REASON, then the following will apply: miss two classes and twenty points will be taken off your final course average; miss three classes and you will FAIL THE COURSE regardless of your course average. Therefore, you should plan accordingly and not skip classes unless you are genuinely ill.

3. Assignments and class participation grade: As directed in class, Angel or the syllabus, some written assignments must be prepared in Word and submitted to a dropbox in Angel. Other assignments will be collected on a haphazard basis or reviewed in class during group learning activities or breaks; no assignments will be accepted for a grade after collection or review in class. When I grade chapter assignments, I am looking for a reasonable attempt to solve the assignment, not perfection. You will be called upon in class to provide your solutions to assignments. For solutions not reviewed in class, I will provide solutions for independent review. All of the assignments that are turned in for a grade are expected to be your individual work effort; if you work with others you must cite and attribute the external support you received from another student(s), person(s), or other resource(s), see ethical standards below for more on my policies regarding this.

You must make substantive contributions to class discussions to earn your participation grade. A substantive contribution is a new observation by you that adds to everyone’s understanding. It is not a simplistic expression of agreement or disagreement with your classmates’ or my comments, nor is it a simplistic regurgitation of textbook/reading material. If you just attend class and do not participate, you will not earn full credit. AN ABSENCE FROM CLASS MEANS A ZERO PARTICIPATION GRADE FOR THE DAY.

4. Examinations/ Quizzes: Questions about the content of quizzes and the exam may only be asked of me in regular class sessions when all of your classmates are present to hear my response. I will not answer questions privately or via e-mail.

Because these are compressed summer sessions in which one class day equals a week of classes, there will be a quiz on every class day and two comprehensive examinations in each semester of this course. The quizzes and examinations may include team or group components as a portion of the grade.

AN ABSENCE FROM CLASS MEANS A ZERO GRADE FOR THE QUIZ. In lieu of make-ups, the lowest quiz grade will be dropped. PLAN ANY ABSENCES ACCORDINGLY as I will treat all absences the same. Arriving late for class, or leaving early from class and missing the quiz will be treated as an absence from class which means you will receive a zero for the quiz.

No physical items may be present on your desk/table during a quiz or exam other than a simple writing instrument, i.e., pencil with eraser, and a simple NON-PROGRAMMABLE calculator (these are available in the bookstore for about $3); if you have other physical items on the desk/table I will fail you on the quiz with a zero. In the computer lab, if you have anything open on the computer desktop other than the quiz/exam you will fail the quiz/exam with a zero. If I see you looking at another table/computer monitor other than your own, I will fail you on the quiz/exam with a zero - be conservative and focus on your work only!

The following items are specifically BANNED FROM ALL QUIZZES AND EXAMS in my course: programmable calculators, cell phones, PDAs, pocket PCs, cameras, text devices, or any other digital or analog communication or recording device. If I see one of the prohibited items during the quiz/exam I will fail you on the quiz/exam. Therefore, if you need to carry any of these items to class, they must remain in a closed backpack or purse compartment with the power OFF for the entire class period on exam days, and off during the quiz portion of regular class days.

If you conscientiously do the assigned reading and assignments in conjunction with preparing your own solutions in advance of class review, and if you actively attend class, you will be sufficiently prepared for the quizzes and examination with modest review. If you fall behind in the reading and assignments, you will find the quizzes and final exam difficult.

5. Reserve Right to Make Changes: If class preparation is lacking, I reserve the right to change the syllabus and the grading criteria to require additional assignments, including submissions prior to class meeting via electronic methods to the appropriate Angel drop-box; any such assignments not submitted to the electronic drop-box by the due date will be zeros.

6. Electronic communications: This course is designed to prepare you for the professional world of work. Electronic communications are an important skill in today's global business world. Therefore, you are responsible for reading your e-mail regularly between class meetings. If my e-mail messages to you continually bounce back due to your e-mail account being full or inactive or disabled due to disciplinary action or a lack of virus protection, you will be penalized on your grade at my discretion. Only registered course members are authorized to use this course's Angel space. You are not authorized to give your password to someone else; violations will be considered a violation of ethical standards (see below.)

7. Providence College Angel Accounts: A failure to abide by the College's regulations regarding your access to its information technology resources will result in you being unable to complete course requirements and will adversely impact your grade. No course requirements will be waived for lack of access due to disciplinary action.

8. Ethical standards: You at an institution that demands the highest standards of integrity from its members. Additionally, you are entering a profession that demands the highest standards of integrity from its members. Papers must be written according to the Chicago Manual of Style or Modern Language Association (MLA), links to which you will find in the writing folder in Angel. Ideas and concepts that are not your original thought must be properly cited to source material or cited to the individual(s) who gave you the idea(s).Cheating or plagiarism or collusion of any form will not be tolerated. Cheating includes turning in the work of another student as your own for any reason, as well as copying any of the work or ideas of others on any assignments or examinations or quizzes. For purposes of completing assignments, working together means consulting and debating, not copying the work of another student. If someone gives you an idea that you are going to use in your work, you must cite the individual who gave you the idea or analysis. Assignments turned in for an individual grade which have been prepared from one file with the name changed, or prepared by multiple students paraphrasing or alternating keystrokes will be considered a violation of this policy! If you have any doubt, that should be RED FLAG to you that it is wrong! You should read the articles in the Angel writing folder for more guidance. Any student determined to be cheating on any aspect of class work will AUTOMATICALLY FAIL THE COURSE WITHOUT EXCEPTION, REGARDLESS OF THE SIGNIFICANCE, OR LACK THEREOF, OF THE ASSIGNMENT. .

9. Having Difficulty? If you are encountering difficulties with any aspect of the course, please contact me as soon as the problem arises.  Delays in seeking assistance can complicate minor matters. Do not wait until just before an assignment's due date or until the end of the semester to request help. Anyone interested in dropping the course must do so by the last date allowed in the semester and must complete the appropriate paperwork with the Records Office and SCE Dean’s Office. Permission to drop will not be given after this date.
