Welcome Back
May 28, 2002

I began work again at First Union Capital Management Group in Great Valley, PA.  This is the third consecutive summer that I have been employed here as a financial analyst.  The beginning of the week was more of a getting setup deal, as I needed a new workstation, and had to consult with the IT dept to get all the necessary software setup on my PC.

In my analyst position, I will be assigned a list of accounts, generally in the range of 75-100, that must be reconciled every day.  These accounts, generally of institutional investors such as pension funds, are maintained on the PORTIA investment software system here, which feeds the MERRIN trading platform used by First Union traders in Charlotte, NC.

My daily job will be to take data from the custodian systems to ensure that this data in PORTIA is correct and that we are trading on the correct information.  At the end of each month I will run performance on my accounts, and indirectly submit the performance to the clients and portfolio managers and strategists.

As of the end of the past week, I had yet to be assigned my own accounts, rather I was helping with the end of month (April) and daily processes of other analysts for the time being. All in all, a bit frustrating considering bureaucratic delays; however, the atmosphere in the office is relaxed (business-casual) and enjoyable.  Hopefully I'll be assigned my accounts within a few days and things will return to what I'm used to.

My responsibilities at Evergreen (FTU) in my first summer were similar to my responsibilities this summer.  However, this summer I will be under far less  supervision, as well as training new hires at times on our systems. The basics of my job have remained the same, but the responsibilities placed at my feet have increased.  The second summer at Evergreen I was in a similar position but I was working in the mutual fund division.  Rather than monitoring and reporting on individual accounts (trusts, etc) I was monitoring the Evergreen family of money market funds.
