Finding the Internship During the winter break of my freshmen year (1999-2000), I called OfficeTeam, a temp service that's part of Robert Half International, about working for a few weeks. I received an assignment with Evergreen, assisting with general office help. After the office manager became acquainted with my academic interests, she referred me to a few managers with whom I spoke about a possible summer position for 2000. I was offered a summer position with Evergreen, and began in May 2000 as a financial analyst, returning for the winter of 2000-2001 and the summer of 2001, followed by the winter of 2001-2002. My employment status is still a temporary employee through FirstPlace, the internal placement arm of FirstUnion/Wachovia. I am employed by the company and accrue service time towards benefit plans as a permanent employee would, so in essence I am a third-year employee. My first preference for employment this summer was a tax internship with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in the Philadelphia office. I've always considered tax my top interest, and I interviewed with Andersen in March 2001 for a position, as well as with PwC in February 2002. I received an invitation to visit the Philadelphia tax practice of PwC, and had a good office visit which featured more interviews. However, internships with Big Five firms are very competitive, and I wasn't able to secure a PwC internship. I will, however, be taking part in the PwC Summer Leadership Program (externship) in Philadelphia at a date to be announced. Next entry, "Welcome Back" |
