College vs. Working Probably the most noticeable change about working at Evergreen [versus being in college] is the hours that I work. My regular hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., depending upon the amount of time for lunch. However, my past semester at PC featured no classes before 10:30 a.m., and generally only three at most on a given day. The time spent on the job is much different; however, the overall amount of time may be similar. When the day is finished, I leave my work in the office, and I'm free until my next day at work. [Editor: Enjoy this while it lasts. Work always finds a way into the home.] However, at school, work outside the classroom, such as group projects, preparation for exams, papers, and homework, all demand a great amount of time. A similarity between the academic world and the business world is that the ability to work in teams is a vital skill. At Evergreen, I work on a team with other analysts covering similar accounts. Therefore, if a problem arises with a given security, chances are that another analyst has experienced the problem also, and we'll work together to solve that problem. Being able to work efficiently in a group environment is a key to succeeding. All in all, college and the working world have their similarities and
differences, as the amount of work can be similar at times. One important
difference though, is that paycheck that arrives twice a month! Next entry, "The Big Picture" |
