The Work Environment
May 29, 2002

One of the reasons that I attempted to get an internship for a second straight summer here [at Hasbro] was the work environment.  The people that work here in the tax department are very friendly and fun to work with, and the summer hours here are 7:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays.

Since last summer, I have kept in contact with several of the people that I worked with and have met them outside of work on occasion.  Although I switched departments, from international to domestic, we are all in the same general area and still interact with each other.  For the most part, the people that are my points of contact are very good teachers and provide me with the necessary training and tools to make my job a much more enjoyable experience.

Hasbro is a huge company with its global headquarters in two buildings in Pawtucket, RI.  I work in the building that is more geared toward the financial record keeping aspect of the business. The other building houses more of the sales and marketing type departments.  Within the tax department, there are probably about 20 people that interact on a daily basis.

Each person has his or her own cube, except for the interns, who are all placed in an area that is equivalent to about 2 cubes, but is divided into thirds, so each of us has our own computer, phone and all the necessary items to complete the assigned work . In general, the atmosphere is very quiet because people are getting their work done, but very often people are going to other cubes to discuss work related issues or just chat in general.

The workload itself is very much a group effort.  It seems like all the work that is done is directly related to the same material that 3 or 4 other people are working on as well.  So while much of the work you do is done individually, quite often you are called on to work on a team and present your work to others.
