URI Engagement On June 10th, 2002, I began working in the field on my first engagement. The staff on this team consists of a Senior, a third-year assistant, a first year assistant, and me. The manager of the engagement comes to URI maybe one to three times; she is based out of the Hartford office along with the other assistants. I’ve actually been working on two engagements: one being the financial statement audit and the other being the NCAA audit. So far I’ve done various tasks pertaining to both the URI audit and the NCAA audit. The first project I had to do was to update the prior year memos which are narratives explaining how the departments at URI operate. I noticed when updating these memos that the auditor truly needs to know how all the processes works. You’ll get a lot of practice writing narratives and flowcharting when you get to Accounting Information Systems with Edwin Mah. When updating these memos I had to set up appointments and interact with various department heads in order for them to sit down with me and discuss the changes that have occurred. Interacting with the staff allows you to meet all different kinds of personalities. Another project I had to do was setting up a huge spreadsheet in order for my Senior to perform an analytical [test]. She compares the 2001 and 2002 trial balances to see if there have been any significant changes. Currently I’ve been doing some sampling and control testing in the URI alumni office, the Payroll office, and the Student loan office. For example, right now I am completing a work paper called Tests of Operating Effectiveness. My co-workers on the URI engagement have been very nice and helpful. I’ve found some days to be harder and more stressful than others. Who you work with really makes a difference. I complete the URI engagement on June 26th. I will then submit an engagement review of what I thought of the engagement and how well I think I performed. My senior will also review my performance on the engagement and submit her opinion to my performance manager. At KPMG, one only has to submit an engagement review if he or she has been at the engagement for 80 hours or more. Also, every employee submits a GOALS form for what he or she feels will try to achieve. I've already submitted that form. For the interns we also submit a interim goals form and a year end as well, all of which our performance manager provides feedback and commentary on. My next assignment is actually a Business Measurement Process (BMP) Advanced Case Study at the Boston office next Thursday and Friday, the 27th and 28th, respectively. This Case study will detail the whole audit approach from beginning to end.Next entry, "BMP Advanced Case Study" |
