Jason Carosi '03
KPMG

Banks
July 23, 2002

The only time I had off besides weekends throughout this internship was the fourth of July weekend.  On July 3rd, I was sorting donations at the Greater Boston Food Bank when Boston had a heat index of 105 degrees.  That was a long day; however, I actually did have fun doing community service with the Boston interns.

Monday, July 8th, I began working at my first bank and second client.  I was at Rockland Trust Independent Bank in Rockland, Massachusetts where I mostly tied numbers together all day and witnessed the process that is needed to be done on a quarter sign-off by the partner and senior manager.   Rockland was a long drive, and I didn’t do much; however, it was very interesting to be with a complete team on an engagement.

From July 10th to the 12th I was back in Providence at Bank R.I. where we were working on another quarter sign-off.  Bank R.I. is right behind KPMG’s Providence office, so that was a convenience for me.  The people at Bank R.I. were very helpful and nice.  I actually knew an old friend’s mother who works as an Account Manager for Bank R.I.  Again, I tied more numbers and assisted my associate.

On July 15th and 16th  I was at Compass Bank located in New Bedford, Massachusetts, which is a subsidiary of Seacoast Financial Corporation.  There I worked with the same associate I did for three days at Bank R.I. and a “sup” senior.  I prepared workpapers (Tests of Operating Effectiveness), an analytical, and tested to make sure that Seascoast’s Internal Audit controls for investments and borrowing were operating effectively.

On Wednesday I was at FirstFed, which was a beautiful bank located in Swansea, Massachusetts.  Again, at FirstFed, I assisted the team with the quarter sign-off.

On July 18th and 19th I was at Washington Trust Company located in Westerly, Rhode Island. where I assisted with the quarter sign-off as well as tested controls for the 401K audit.  I also prepared two workpapers for one of the assistants, “Test of Operating Effectiveness” and “Significant Issues Decisions Documented.”

The first day I was out the senior manager took us out for lunch at “Pizza Place” in Westerly, Rhode Island. where I had for the first time had pizza with cheese, pineapples and ham on it; I think it is called Hawaiian pizza.

On Monday, July 22nd, I was in the office where I was unassigned for the day, so I basically just assisted any of the staff members who needed assistance; we also celebrated one of the employee’s birthday.  At the end of the day, I left a little early to make a delivery to AIPSO located in Johnston.

Starting today, July 23rd, through Friday I will be working in Waltham, Massachusetts at Panametrics.  I am with a team of 15 doing an observation of inventory.  The inventory observation consists of us auditors drawing samples and counting their inventory.  So far it is exciting and it is nice to be with a team from cities all over like Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Providence, Boston, and New York.
