'At a Glance' – New Core Curriculum

The following is an encapsulation of the new Core Curriculum effective for the Class of 2016:

Foundational Component

  • DWC - 16 credit hours

  • Theology - 6

  • Philosophy - 6

  • Natural Science - 3-4

  • Social Science - 3

  • Quantitative Reasoning - 3-4

  • Fine Arts - 3

Foundational Component Notes

  • DWC is four semesters of 4 hours each in the new Core as opposed to four semesters of 5 hours each in the former Core.

  • The DWC requirement remains 20 hours for Liberal Arts Honors students.

  • Natural Science is reduced from 6-8 hours (2 courses) to 3-4 hours (1 course).

  • Social Science is reduced from 6 hours (2 courses) to 3 hours (1 course).

  • The Quantitative Reasoning requirement replaces the Math requirement, but can be fulfilled by an approved Math course.

Core Focus/Concentration

  • 2 courses/6 credit hours

Core Focus/Concentration Notes

  • Greater student choice is introduced into the new Core with the ability for students to designate a core focus or concentration area, within a foundational discipline or along an interdisciplinary theme.

Proficiencies

  • Intensive Writing - 2 courses

  • Oral Communication - 1

  • Diversity - 1

  • Civic Engagement - 1

Proficiencies Notes

  • It is expected that learning proficiencies will be met by courses taken for the major, the Core foundational component, the Core focus/concentration, or carefully chosen free electives.

  • Students must meet a minimum writing proficiency requirement (TBD) prior to taking intensive writing courses.

  • Intensive Writing courses will typically be capped at 18 students and Oral Communication courses will typically be capped at 20.

  • Nine hours of non-departmental electives will no longer be required in the Core.

Core Administration

  • Two new, faculty-led committees will administer the Core Curriculum: the Core Curriculum Committee (CCC) and the Development of Western Civilization Program Committee (DWCPC).
