What to Do If You are Assaulted

Get to a safe place immediately.

Seek help.

Receive medical attention as soon as possible.
It is extremely important to be examined for internal and external injuries.  A medical professional is able to discuss options with you.  Students should strongly consider having a medical examination at Women & Infants Hospital (general number: 401-274-1100) (emergency number: 401-274-1122 ext.1750 ) or seeing their own private gynecologist.

Try to preserve all physical evidence.
Students contemplating disciplinary action via the College disciplinary process and/or criminal action via Rhode Island's legal justice system against an assailant should be examined by a medical professional especially trained in the collection of evidence.  Examinations can be done at Women & Infants Hospital.  It is important to keep the following in mind:

  • After the first 24 hours, the quality of evidence usually decreases but can be collected up to 72 hours after the assault.
  • Do not wash or douche.
  • Try not to urinate.
  • If oral contact took place, do not eat, drink liquids, or brush teeth.
  • Do not comb or brush hair.
  • If changing clothes is necessary, clothing worn during the assault should be placed in a paper bag.

Even if the above-mentioned recommendations have not been followed, seeking medical attention is still recommended.

Remember the assault is not your fault. Don't hesitate to get support.
