How to Help a Friend
  • Be supportive.
  • Believe her/him.
  • Be reassuring.
  • Provide information about reporting the assault .

  • Encourage seeing a doctor.
  • Encourage contacting a counselor.
  • Offer a safe place to stay.
  • Let your friend know she/he is not to blame.
  • Listen, do not judge.
  • Be available.
  • Be patient and understanding.
  • Be empowering, not overly protective.
  • Let her/him make her/his own decisions.
  • Assist in getting help.

  • Don't touch or hug your friend unless you are sure your friend is comfortable with physical contact.
  • Don't tell any other peers about the assault without your friend's permission.
  • Ask how you can help.
  • You may be feeling overwhelmed; be sure to seek help for yourself.
