Safety & Emergency Communications

Recognizing that multiple means of communication must be used simultaneously should a campus-wide emergency occur, Providence College has implemented "Connect Ed," a specialized notification system that can utilize cell phones, campus phones, and e-mail to send emergency messages to students, faculty, and staff.

Information Technology staff have collected available cell phone numbers for all students. Members of the College faculty and staff will be able to "opt in" for this service in the near future.

Additional Methods of Communication:

  • More than 40 emergency "blue light" telephones are located throughout campus; all emergency calls are received in the Office of Safety and Security, which has the ability to monitor activity in the area through remote cameras. Twenty-five of these emergency telephones are being re-engineered to include a new "Red Light" signal and audible message capability that can be activated to alert students, faculty, and staff of a campus-wide emergency and send an audible message with instructions about what immediate actions individuals should take.*
  • The College has developed protocols for utilizing campus radio and television communications systems to issue emergency messages.
  • Campus security vehicles have been retrofitted with public address systems to enable broadcast of emergency alerts and/or instructions.

When information or instructions are broadcast through any of the above communication channels, all members of the campus community should immediately follow the specific instructions provided in that broadcast.

*Notice of Emergency Blue Light Phone Upgrades

As part of Providence College’s efforts to enhance the safety and security of the Providence College Community, several of the emergency blue light phones on campus are due to be upgraded from April through July. The emergency phones in selected areas of the campus will be removed for several weeks while they are being refurbished. Four to five emergency phones have been designated to be removed in locations where another emergency phone is in close proximity in case of an emergency.

This notice is to notify all students, faculty and staff that the emergency phones will be removed temporarily from several areas on campus. While on campus, please be aware of your surroundings and stay in lighted well lit areas when possible. You may call the Safety and Security office at 401-865-2391, if you would like to utilize escort services. Refer back to this page for further updates.
