RESIDENCE HALL INFORMATION

The following information should prove helpful to you in your preparation for taking up residence on the campus of Providence College .

FURNISHING OF YOUR ROOM

Although you may share your room with one, two, or three roommates, each student is provided with his/her own furniture.  Your room is equipped with a bunkable bed (except McVinney Hall), desk, chair, and either a bureau or under-the-bed-storage unit.  The sheet size for your bed is 36” x 80” (a long twin).  You will need to provide all other items for furnishing your room according to your own taste.  Rooms in Aquinas Hall (First Floor), Meagher Hall (Ground Floor), and McVinney Hall have wall-to-wall carpeting.  All college-supplied furniture must remain in the rooms at all times or a charge will be assessed to each student of the room.

WHAT TO BRING (Personal Items)

In addition to a comforter, pillows, linens, towels, blankets, and clothes hangers, students surveyed recommend that you consider bringing the following personal items: a computer, surge protectors, desk lamp, a clamp-on bed lamp, light bulbs, batteries, a raincoat or umbrella, an alarm clock, an area rug (if room is not carpeted), metal crates, shower shoes, microwaveable bowls, glasses, some silverware, an iron, a carrier for shower items, and general toiletries.

WHAT TO BRING (Common Use Items)

Since you will receive the name(s) of your roommate(s), you may wish to call or write them to decide on who will bring what for common use.  Some items you might want to consider: a refrigerator (2.5 cubic feet in size), a microwave oven, a stereo, a telephone, a garbage can, and a television (all rooms receive cable TV service provided by the College).  Extra furniture is not permitted (please refer to the Prohibited Furniture Listing).

PERSONAL COMPUTERS

It is highly recommended that you have a surge protection device and cable lock for your laptop or desktop computer since rooms are not hard wired.  For your own protection, please make sure you have insurance coverage for computers and other personal items (CD players, stereos, etc.).  You will receive information about a College-supported insurance policy in the mail.  The college is not responsible for the loss of personal items.

WHAT NOT TO BRING FOR USE IN ROOM

Providence College takes fire safety seriously, and therefore the use of some items in student rooms are not permitted.  These regulated items include: electric blankets, curling irons, flat irons, popcorn poppers, hot plates and pots, broiler ovens, coffee makers, toasters, immersion heaters, Halogen lamps, and Christmas lights.

Many of the above items, such as hot plates and curling irons, can be used in common areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.  Ironing boards are provided in most bathroom areas.

ALL CANDLES (including those for decoration only), incense, and any open flames are strictly prohibited.

A word about PLASTICS.  Because plastics emit hazardous fumes in fire situations, we ask that you limit your use of plastic items.  For under-the-bed storage, cardboard sweater-style boxes are recommended.

Most types of extension cords are not permitted.  Multi-plug, 4’ x 6’ length, extenders with surge protection and 3-prong extension cord (one per student) are allowed.

DUCT TAPE is not to be used when hanging posters and pictures on the walls.

Pets (except fish in ten gallon tanks or less) are not allowed in the room either.

There is no smoking permitted in any of the Providence College Residence Halls or buildings.

VOICE MAIL

Providence College has a campus wide and off campus Voice Messaging System.  You will NOT need to bring an ANSWERING MACHINE.  Important student information is periodically broadcast over the Voice Messaging System.    It is strongly urged that you activate your voice mail and check it periodically.

SPECIAL NEEDS

If special needs (not mentioned on the Housing Application Form) develop which would impact your housing assignment, please notify the Office of Residence Life (401-865-2392) immediately.
