Each of the alternative spring break and immersion programs described in this brochure offer a unique opportunity for you to serve, to experience a new culture, to build community, and to reflect on your service experiences.

We invite you to LIVE the mission of PC through these service programs offered by the offices of Campus Ministry and the Feinstein Institute for Public Service.  In addition, you can earn academic credit by enrolling in an interdiscplinary service learning course offered by the departments of political science and public and community service studies.

NOLA Immersion:  Rebuilding the Gulf, Responding to the Gospel

A faith-based service immersion trip to New Orleans sponsored by the Office of the Chaplain/Campus Ministry

Participants serve the local community, critically analyze the post-Katrina reality, and immerse themselves in the faith, food, and culture of the city and its residents.  This trip includes intentional prayer and reflection, a pre-trip retreat, and a commitment to living simply and in community while on the trip.

Crossing Borders

A student-led service immersion trip to Tijuana, Mexico, in collaboration with the Feinstein Institute for Public Service

Participants work alongside a local community to build a home for a family in need while also exploring issues related to immigration and Mexican culture.  Evenings are spent visiting a migrant worker home, an orphanage, and the Mexico/U.S. border.  As participants engage with the community, they gain a better understanding of the circumstances that cause people to leave their homes and the struggles associated with the journey.

Habitat for Humanity

A student-led service program, in collaboration with the Office of the Chaplain/Campus Ministry

Habitat for Humanity trips focus on building affordable housing for families living in poverty.  Trip locations include places such as Virginia, New Jersey, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia.  All trips include reflection and education about homelessness and poverty; some trips may have an additional focus on simple living.  Habitat is a great spring break option for service pros and novices- participants will learn all of the construction skills needed on the work site, make great friends with fellow volunteers, work alongside owners of Habitat homes, and help to eliminate poverty housing in America.

Simply Sustainable

A new, student-led service trip exploring sustainable living options, in collaboration with the Feinstein Institute for Public Service

This trip offers an opportunity to experience sustainable living by spending a week on a sustainable farm.  Students assist with the daily activities of farm life, learn about the choices people make to ensure our world has a future, and discover sustainable practices they can implement individually and in their home communities. 

PC-AZ: Providence College- San Carlos, AZ

A student-led, cultural immersion trip in collaboration with the Feinstein Institute for Public Service

Participants stay with Apache host families, take part in daily Apache life, and provide service in schools, a day care center, an older adult center, and a Boys and Girls Club.  They experience the natural beauty of the Southwest and immerse themselves in a forgotten culture, build relationships with Apache families, and learn about the complexity of present-day Native Americans. 

Faith, Politics, and Service

An interdisciplinary service learning class and trip offered by the political science and public and community service departments

Students who enroll in the Faith, Politics, and Service course plan and participate in this trip which explores the complexity of three significant issues both pre- and post-Katrina New Orleans.  Students engage in service during the day and classes and immersion experiences during the evenings.
