Office Materials

The Recycling Program takes a number of office materials for recycling.  All items can be sent to us via inter-office mail (Attention: Recycling Program, Office of Environmental Health and Safety) or dropped off at the Recycling Center, located next to the Power Plant on upper campus.  We are working to establish more drop-off sites in the future.

Printer Cartridges
All types and brands of printer cartridges from computer printers, fax machines, etc., are accepted for recycling.  For photo-copy machine cartridges, please contact the Copy Center at ext. 2436.

Floppy Disks
All 3 1/2" floppy disks are accepted for recycling, including program start-up disks.

Overhead Transparencies
All used transparencies are accepted for recycling.  Used transparencies are sent to 3M corporation, where they are remade into various products, such as fiber fill, carpeting, automotive products, insulation and more transparency film.

Before recycling, reduce and reuse first!

OFFICE CLEAN-OUTS
Are you doing an office clean-out?  Instead of throwing away all that paper, we can provide you with paper roll out carts to recycle all your paper!

Please call the Recycling Program at ext. 1881 and we will deliver you a paper recycling cart.  When done, give us a call, and we will come pick it up for you!  It's that easy!

Tips for Reducing Office Waste:

It is easy to reduce office waste by simply reducing waste in the first place and reusing what is already available.  Reducing the amount of waste created is preferable to recycling waste created and will help you save money.  Here are a few tips for reducing waste at its source(taken from the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, www.rirrc.org ):

  • Invest in equipment that is durable and easy to repair.  Negotiate good service contracts.
  • Maintain central files rather than filing all pieces of paper in multiple files (saves filing space and reduces the need to purchase more filing cabinets)
  • Use e-mail for correspondence rather than paper (and do not print your emails if you do not really need to!)
  • Copy documents on both sides of the paper.  Duplexing can save up to 50% in paper purchasing and reduce mailing costs.
  • Reuse paper printed on one side by binding pads to be used for internal notes, scratch pads, writing pads and phone messages.   Used paper is also great for printing draft documents.  (The Copy Center is Feinstein makes these pads of papers and are available for your taking!)
  • Keep mailing lists up-to-date.
  • If your firm has a cafeteria or holds many parties or other events where food is served, invest in reusable glassware, dinnerware, silverware, etc., rather than relying on disposables.
  • If you provide coffee service for employees, purchase supplies in bulk rather than in individual packets.  Supply mugs branded with the company logo rather than disposable cups.
  • Avoid non-recyclable products such as plastic report covers
  • Appoint one person to order all business supplies to ensure that money isn’t wasted on unnecessary purchases of products that will just be thrown away.
  • Bring in your own mug for coffee and tea and your own bottle for water!  I suggest purchasing a sturdy Nalgene bottle, as they are virtually unbreakable, very durable and keeps the water cold for a long time!  These bottles can be purchased at the PC Bookstore or outdoor sporting stores, such as EMS, OR your local Army and Navy Surplus Store.
  • Reuse file folders!  Simply cross out the old file name or put a sticker or piece of tape on the label and you are set to go!
  • Many office supply catalogs have sections in the back especially for recycled items. There are also many web sites that offer recycled products for your home and office. Some stores make it easy to find recycled products by marking the shelves.
