It is very important that batteries are recycled correctly and not disposed of in the trash. Federal and State Law requires that specific technologies must be utilized to prevent the leaching of lead acid and other chemicals in landfills. Batteries contain many hazardous chemicals, including mercury, silver, lead, chromium and cadmium. When disposed of in landfills, these chemicals can leach into the ground and consequently contaminate soil and groundwater.
The Recycling Program encourages the use of rechargeable batteries whenever possible. Please visit the website www.greenbatteries.com for all the information you need on rechargeable batteries!
Providence College recycles all types of batteries. There are currently 3 drop-off locations on campus for battery recycling:
- Recycling Office, Office of Environmental Health and Safety (located next to the Power Plant)
- Physical Plant Office
- Slavin Center.
You can also send your batteries for recycling via inter-office mail. Simply drop them in an envelope and address it: "Attention: Recycling Program, Office of Environmental Health and Safety."
