The Recycling Program at Providence College endeavors to reduce waste on campus, promote the recycling of materials, and maintain and promote a clean, sustainable and environmentally conscious campus.
Recycling for certain categories of solid waste is mandated by Rhode Island State law. The program works with other departments on campus, including Residence Life, Physical Plant and the S.A.I.L. office, to educate students, faculty and staff about recycling procedures and policies on campus.
The program also works on issues of reuse, waste reduction, energy and water conservation and awareness of various environmental issues. The program strives to make Providence College a model of a sustainable and environmentally responsible institution. It is the goal of the program to educate students, faculty and staff about their daily impacts on the earth and to give them the tools to take positive actions to protect and sustain our living world.
All students, faculty and staff participate in the recycling program.
The participation of each individual at Providence College ensures the success of the recycling program.
How this is achieved:
- It is ensured that all buildings and outdoor areas on campus are equipped with the proper recycling receptacles. Old receptacles and containers are replaced with new ones on an as-needed basis. This includes the set-up of recycling stations which include containers for batteries, floppy disks, and printer cartridges, as well as cans and bottles and mixed paper. We continue to receive feedback from the campus community on where recycling containers are needed and we strive to ensure that recycling is easily accessible to all.
- Education is essential to the success of the recycling program. Continually educating students, faculty, and staff about campus recycling is a major part of the program. Student education is conducted at freshmen orientations and Resident Assistant trainings, through the posting of informational flyers in trash rooms and residence halls, and sending out occasional recycling reminders through mass emails. We also work with student organizations to help promote recycling and environmental responsibility on campus.
Faculty and staff education is mainly conducted through a monthly newsletter, Closing the Loop, updating the campus community on recycling and waste reduction news, as well as occasional mass emails
-
The program closely monitors recycling and trash statistics, to keep abreast of the amount of recyclables that are collected. The campus as a whole is looked at, as well as individual buildings. Problem areas are targeted and worked on until the recycling rates are up again.
