Each year when students move out, the amount of waste created at Providence College soars. Clearing out old, unwanted cloth
es, books, food, furniture and miscellaneous items, students want to leave behind what they can.
In 2008, in an effort to reclaim these items and redistribute them to those who can use them, the Recycling Program, Physical Plant and Residence Life Office worked together to reduce this unnecessary waste.
We focused on collecting two main goods that were consistently thrown out: clothing and food. We set up boxes in the lobbies of each residence hall and did our best to pick them up and empty them every day. We were overwhelmed with the results!
We collected:
**65 lawn size trash bags of clothing and shoes (approx. 2,800 pounds)
AND
**2,600 pounds of food!
Clothing and shoes were donated to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.
Food was donated to the Rhode Island Food Bank.
We hope to expand our collection efforts. We are NOW looking for volunteers who are willing to help us with this great endeavor! Please call the Recycling Program at 865-1881 for more information.
