Residence Halls

dormEvery Residence Hall on campus is equipped with recycling for:

  • cans and bottles
  • mixed paper
  • cardboard

For guidelines on what can be recycled in each tote, please refer to the links under What is Recycled on Campus?

As a rule, recycling totes for cans and bottles are generally in the trash rooms, or right outside the trash rooms, if the room is too small.

Exceptions:

  • the first floors of Cunnigham, Ditraglia and Mal Brown must deposit recycling and trash in the appropriate containers in the basement, as there is no trash room on the first floor.
  • for the basement and first floor levels in Meagher and McDermott, the trash rooms are too small to house the recycling totes, so they are located in a visible spot in the hallways/lobbies.
  • for the first floor in Fennell, there is only one trash room and is not large enough to hold the recycling tote, so the CANS AND BOTTLES recycling tote is in the lobby, along with the tote for MIXED PAPER.  Please place the appropriate items in each tote and place trash in the barrels in the trash room.

Recycling totes for mixed paper are located in the lobby of every residence hall.  We cannot place paper recycling in the trash rooms, simply because most trash rooms on campus are too small.  Please set aside a paper grocery bag and deposit recyclable paper in it.  When it is full, bring it down to the paper recycling tote.  You can recycle the paper bag, as well!

For cardboard, please break down boxes and flatten them.  Place them in the trash room, off to the side, but NOT in the trash barrels.  Hurley of America will collect the cardboard separately for recycling.

Recycling Totes are usually put out Sunday and Wednesday evenings for the recycling truck.  Please hold onto your recyclables until the totes are put back the next day; DO NOT throw them in trash.

Other Items

Clothing and Shoes
Please placed unwanted clothing (in good condition) in the donation box run by the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.  It is located in the lower campus parking lot on Huxley Avenue, across from Davis Hall.  Please refer to the "Clothing and Shoes" link for more information

Computers and Electronics
Please call the Recycling Hotline at ext. 1881 if you have any computers, parts, televisions, printers or other electronics you would like to get rid of.  These items cannot go in the trash.  We will come pick them up for you and recycle them properly.

Batteries, Printer Cartridges, Floppy Disks, Overhead Transparencies
Please drop these items off at the Recycling Centre, which is located next to the Power Plant on upper campus.  If you have small quantities, you can also send them to us via inter-office mail, Attention: Recycling Program, Office of Environmental Health and Safety.  Batteries can also be dropped off at the Physical Plant Office on lower campus, or the Biology Office, in Sowa Hall.  We hope to set up drop-off locations for these items soon in Slavin Center and the Mail Room.

Miscellaneous
If you have other items you would like to get rid of, but you think can be used again by others, please call the Recycling Hotline at ext. 1881 and we will find a home for them.  Please be aware that at the end of the year, our office undertakes a massive effort to collect all unwanted food and clothing.  This year we hope to expand this offering to include other items.  Stay tuned for more information.

IMPORTANT... PLEASE READ!

In order for recycling and waste reduction to succeed on campus, it requires the responsibility and participation of everyone on campus.  An important part of this success lies in respecting others.  Many people on this campus work hard to keep it clean, particularly Hurley of America and Physical Plant.  Please respect the hard work they do to keep the campus and residence halls clean for you.  Please follow these guidelines to help:

  • Please keep trash rooms as clean and neat as possible.  If a container is overflowing, please wait until it is emptied to deposit trash.  Do not throw trash on the floor.
  • Do not throw trash in the containers CLEARLY MARKED for recycling.  Likewise, do not throw recyclables into the trash containers.  Though they do not have to, many times Hurley of America staff will go through the garbage and take out recyclables and put them in the right container.  THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THIS.  It is the responsibility of Hall Directors, RA’s and residents to deposit their trash and recycling correctly.
  • Please make sure all recyclables are empty and cleaned.  For example, we do not want half full jars of tomato sauce or soda spilling into the recycling OR trash containers.  Rinsing items quickly will make the trash room cleaner and not smell.
  • Please keep an eye on the trash room on your floor.  If you notice that the recycling container is repeatedly filled with trash or recyclables are being deposited in the trash, please let me know so we can work together to fix the situation.  I check the trash rooms as often as I can, but I cannot do it every week, so it is a big help if you can keep me abreast of any problems.
  • All trash room doors are marked with flyers indicating what can and cannot be recycled.  Please make sure you are aware of this information.  If you have questions about certain items, please refer to this website, Recycling Handbookd for Students or call the Recycling Hotline at ext. 1881.
  • Cardboard: This is important, especially when students are first moving in.  Any cardboard boxes need to be broken down, flattened and placed in the trash room, but NOT in the trash barrels.  Hurley of America will take the cardboard separately for recycling.
  • Please be aware of items that CANNOT be thrown away and must be recycled properly.  These items include batteries, printer cartridges, floppy disks, computers and parts, cell phones, old clothes and shoes, overhead transparencies and packing peanuts.  Drop off locations are in the process of being set-up for these items; you can also call me when you have some of these items and I will pick them up.  It is especially important computers and batteries are disposed of properly, as these items contain hazardous chemicals.
  • If everyone is aware of recycling and trash procedures, the whole school year will go by smoothly.  Your help is greatly appreciated!
