American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS)
Salzburg, Austria
Few countries could be more exciting in which to study than Austria, a peaceful democracy with cultural and economic ties to both eastern and western Europe. Birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg is one of the most elegant and interesting cities in Europe. Renowned throughout Europe for its international arts and performance festivals, Salzburg is a celebration of music. With its beer gardens and cafés, lakes, mountains and fresh air, Salzburg invites you outdoors. You can spend an afternoon on a lake or hiking in the hills and then go out for an evening of music or theater at one of the many world-class centers. The city of Salzburg is compact and accessible, and travel throughout the rest of Austria is easy and efficient.
University of Salzburg
Founded in 1622, the University of Salzburg achieved great prestige during the reign of the Habsburg Empire and was one of the most famous universities of 17th and 18th century Europe. After WWII, the University was re-established and is now flourishing. The University of Salzburg capitalizes on its position as a leading university in the center of Europe. An interdisciplinary Department of International Relations and Political Science draws students from around the world to meet with faculty and each other to help solve the problems of the 21st century. Faculty from this department teach classes in English exclusively for AIFS students. You can study effects of trade agreements and multinational corporations on development, or how to solve a crisis in international conflicts.
Your time in Salzburg provides a unique opportunity to learn the language of Freud, Kafka, Goethe and Hesse. The German language is a great asset to those interested in careers in international finance, law or politics. The University provides a supportive atmosphere in which to learn German because of its international outlook and faculty committed to helping students.
