University of Granada, Spain, AIFS

American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS)

Granada, Spain
Granada offers students a great climate and location. A lively city with more than 300,000 inhabitants, Granada is perched between the dazzling white peaks of the Sierra Nevada and the glistening blue Mediterranean of the Costa del Sol . With its wide plains, high mountains and sunny coastline, Andalucia retains some of the most breath-taking scenery in Spain. Students see some of the most beautiful and intricate buildings of the medieval world in Andalucia. International resorts on the coast contrast with the agricultural life of the inland plains, where students can still find traditional Spanish white-washed villages, flamenco music, bullfights and festivals.

University of Granada

Built by Emperor Charles V in 1526, the University of Granada is one of the most prestigious universities in Spain. Known for its Spanish as a second language course, the University has courses in language and culture to suit varied levels of expertise.

Students attend classes at the University of Granada’s Centro de Lenguas Modernas. The University has dedicated this Center to the teaching of Spanish Language and Culture to foreign students and to their integration into Spanish society. The Centro is in an old building which has a beautiful central courtyard and has been totally renovated and equipped with modern classrooms, audio visual equipment, computer facilities and a library. Small groups are the norm and all professors are native Spaniards.

Unless AIFS students take advanced level Hispanic Studies at the University, they will not be in class with Spanish students. AIFS students in Advanced Hispanic Studies may attend a maximum of two University of Granada courses with Spanish students in any of the 21 different university schools or facultades.  Spanish students at the University can also take foreign languages at the Centro including English, German, Arabic, French and several other languages. The Centro organizes a program of intercambios (conversation exchange). The professors of English are always eager to find American students to participate in this program with Spanish students at the University.
