American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS)
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and is the second largest city in Spain, with a population of 1.5 million. The city’s origins can be traced back to the first century B.C. and the Roman colony of Barcino. Its 2,000 years of history have left their mark on the city’s architectural, artistic and cultural heritage. Its excellent location in terms of international communication, Mediterranean climate and cosmopolitan character make it a particularly privileged city.
Pompeu Fabra University
Pompeu Fabra University was founded in 1990. It is a young and innovative public university located in the heart of Barcelona, between the historic center and the Olympic Village. It is well served by public transport (metro, bus and train services) and is near the Mediterranean Sea and Barcelona’s lively port.
Professor Pompeu Fabra was born in Barcelona in 1868. He is considered the father of modern Catalan. Although most academic year courses are taught in Catalan, the Department of Hispanic Studies offers an excellent academic program of Spanish language and cultural classes taught in Spanish.
