Academic Program
Blackfriars, a Dominican House of Studies and a Permanent Private Hall of Oxford University, offers PC students an opportunity to pursue a full year of intensive scholarly work in religious studies, philosophy, English literature, and British history. Courses are offered in the traditional Oxford format of one-on-one tutorials and small group lectures. Students will attend classes and tutorial sessions, submit papers, and take examinations in the manner of British university education.
Students select, for each term, one tutorial in philosophy or theology and one tutorial in English or history. In addition, Providence College students are required to take at least one lecture course per term. This course load results in a total of 30 academic credits for the year. The Director of Studies will help students plan courses and advise about academic work.
The academic year is divided into three terms:
Michaelmas Term : mid-October to early December
Hilary Term: mid-January to mid-March
Trinity Term: late April to late June
Eligibility
For this program, students must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better. Assessment of the student's ability to produce the appropriate scholarly work in the tutorial courses and demonstrated capacity for independent, self-directed study are important aspects of the application process for this program.
