Academic Year Programs

London, England
London is a multicultural city hosting people from around the world.  Theatreland, the west end, the Royal Opera House and the British Library and Museum are some of the main attractions.  It is a center for government and law, Europe’s leading financial market, and a style-setting center of cultural life.  National and international travel resources are easily accessible, and public transportation within the city is easy and inexpensive.

London School of Economics and Political Science
The London School of Economics and Political Science is one of the largest schools of the University of London and is the leading social science institution in the world.   The School has a strong undergraduate program with twenty major departments and twenty-eight research centers and interdisciplinary institutes. LSE is located right in central London.

The LSE Student Union organizes concerts, films, cabaret and discos, and funds over 130 student societies.  Providence College students are granted full membership into the Student Union as well as the Athletic Union which houses 26 clubs for a wide range of sports.  Students also have access to the Library and Computer facilities.

The Tutor for the General Course students at the London School of Economics and Political Science assists overseas students with practical aspects of living and studying in London.  In addition, each department provides a faculty member as the tutor/advisor for students.

Academic Program
The program offers students the opportunity to spend the academic year fully integrated into the university's academic and social community.  Courses consist of a mixture or lectures and linked classes or group tutorials, where discussion and student participation are encouraged.  Students will attend classes, submit papers, and take final examinations along with the other LSE students.

Students usually select four courses with a total number of credits that is equivalent to 30 US credits for the year.  Students will have an opportunity to discuss course selection in detail with advisors and faculty members in the appropriate departments at the School.

The academic year is divided into three terms:

  • Michaelmas Term: late September to mid-December
  • Lent Term: mid-January to late March
  • Summer Term: late April to early July

Eligibility
For this program, students must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better.  Assessment of the student’s ability to produce the appropriate scholarly work in the courses and a capacity for independent, self-directed study are important aspects of the application process for this program.
