Academic Year Program
Homerton College, England

Cambridge, England
Cambridge is a busy market town and regional center situated on the banks of the River Cam. Cambridge is a clean, compact and pleasant city with plenty of green open spaces and medieval buildings. There are reasonable shopping facilities and plenty of social and sporting activities. Good road and rail links provide easy access to national and international destinations. Most students get around Cambridge by bicycle.

Homerton College is one of 32 colleges that comprise the University of Cambridge. The internationally renowned College originated in London in 1695 and began training teachers in 1850. It moved to its present site in Cambridge in 1894. Students are taught both at Homerton and in University teaching rooms, depending on their subjects of study. Homerton is situated among its own gardens, playing fields and orchard on a 25-acre site.

The students at Homerton have access to a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, drama, politics and three Student Unions. Students also have access to the Library and Computing facilities.

The Director of the Junior Year Abroad program at Homerton, assisted by Tutors and a Resident Dean, is responsible for the students' well-being and academic programs at Cambridge.

Academic Program

Homerton College at the University of Cambridge offers PC students an opportunity to pursue a full year of intensive study in the liberal arts and sciences and teacher education. Most classes are small and informal. In addition to class sessions, students will have "supervisions". These are meetings with a faculty member to discuss students' essays and other written work. Students will attend classes and tutorial sessions, submit papers and take final examinations along with the British students.

Students enroll for four or five classes during each term, and normally receive 30 US credits for the academic year. Each student is assigned a faculty member as the Director of Studies, who will help to plan courses and advise students about academic work.

The academic year is divided into three terms:
  • Michaelmas Term: late September to mid-December
  • Lent Term: early January to mid-March
  • Easter Term: mid-April to late June

Eligibility
For this program, students must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.4. SAT scores of at least 650 in verbal and 650 in math are required. At least one college level semester of courses in English, Math and/or Science, Foreign Language, and two other academic subjects.
