Seven Students Awarded Father Smith Fellowships for Study and Service Abroad

Students selected to receive fellowships this year are:

• Joseph Slattery ’13 (Mount Airy, Md.), a biology major, and Emily Corr ’13 (Commack, N.Y.), a social science major, will work with the Eastern Australian Dominican Sisters in Sydney, Australia — Slattery in health care ministry and Corr in education ministry.

• Clare Carroll ’13 (Merrick, N.Y.), an English major, and Cayla McKernan ’13 (Monroe, Conn.), a psychology major, will work in the areas of education and health with Rev. Christopher M. Cardone, O.P. ’80 & ’01Hon., bishop of Auki, Malaita Island, Solomon Islands.

• Beatriz Forster ’14 (Glastonbury, Conn.), a double major in history and political science, and Laura Wells ’14 (Poughquag, N.Y.), a mathematics major, will study at Blackfriars Hall at Oxford University in England. Forster will examine the relevance of G.K. Chesterton’s apologetics to contemporary academia. Wells will examine the nature of Catholic feminism in the writings of the philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe and Pope John Paul II.

• Emily Foster ’13 (Wrentham, Mass.), a psychology major, will work with the Dominican NGO at the United Nations Council on Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland.

Father Smith fellowships, first awarded in 2009, are funded in part through a gift from Kathleen Tellier Murray ’83G, who served on PC’s Board of Trustees from 2000-08, and her husband, Thomas Murray. Father Smith, who died in 2007, was a member of the Class of 1963 and served as PC’s 11th president from 1994-2005.
