"If we spoke a different language, we would perceive a somewhat different world." --Ludwig Wittgenstein

The moment when one’s own language is displaced as the locus of all meaning, one’s sense of self is both expanded and transcended. Knowledge of a language other than one's own provides access into the thought processes of another culture and is essential for responsible participation in the global community.

Understanding another language and culture from within fosters an appreciation and respect for the diversity of humanity. The individual identity is enriched by identifying with what has been previously perceived as difference.

The Department of Modern Languages is committed to promote language learning and cultural understanding in accordance with the Mission of the College to prepare our “students to be responsible and productive citizens to serve in their own society and the greater world community.” - Providence College Mission Statement
