CARROLL TOWER

A part of the Providence Housing Authority and located in the Smith Hill neighborhood, Carroll Tower is a 16-story concrete high-rise building primarily consisting of efficiency and one-bedroom apartments for the elderly. Over half of the residents are Spanish-speaking. The Providence Housing Authority exists to develop and maintain decent, safe, and sanitary housing, and to address the economic and social needs of residents.

CHAD BROWN HEALTH CENTER

Chad Brown Health Center has served the health care needs of its community for more than thirty-five years. The Center serves a diverse population of families, seniors, college students, immigrants, refugees and peoples of all races and ethnic backgrounds. Services provided include: family medicine, prenatal and GYN services, childbirth education classes, pediatric care, well child care, AIDS testing and counseling, blood pressure monitoring, health education and WIC Nutrition Program. Volunteers support the health education and community outreach efforts of the center.

DIOCESE OF PROVIDENCE

Diocese of Providence’s Social and Multicultural Ministries Offices develop, implement, and support ministries and services that reach thousands of Rhode Islanders each year. Immigration and Refugee Services is one of the many social programs offered in the Diocese of Providence. It recognizes that diversity enriches the culture of the city and thus strives to provide the immigrants of Providence with the legal and social resources they need to remain active members of the community. The Diocese offers ESL classes through Project Hope and Citizenship classes through Immigration and Refugee services. Volunteers who choose to participate in these classes will assist immigrants of Providence in preparing to take their naturalization exam, the final step along the path to United States citizenship and/or teaching English to adult learners through the Project Hope initiative.

DORCAS PLACE

Since 1981, Dorcas Place Adult and Family Learning Center has been giving low-income Rhode Islanders the educational opportunities they need to realize their full potential and climb the ladder to success—through literacy, workplace training, college preparatory programs, and employment. Over the past 20 years, Dorcas Place has sought to advocate for and with low-income parents and other adults in order to expand public and private awareness of, and response to, the needs of this population. Their programs recognize the direct link between illiteracy and the problems of long-term welfare dependency, children growing up in poverty, teenage pregnancy, child abuse and neglect, crime and chronic unemployment.

ENGLISH FOR ACTION

English for Action's (EFA) mission is to serve Latino immigrant families in Providence through participatory English language and childcare programs that link language learning, leadership development and community-building. They use innovative learning tools—such as the visual arts, theater of the oppressed and action projects—to engage adults and younger learners in dialogue, reflection and collaboration. They strive to create transformative learning communities inside and outside the classroom, in order to effect meaningful and community-based social change in Olneyville and the greater Providence community.The Conversation Partners Program supports adult learners currently enrolled in ESOL classes by providing an opportunity to practice their English speaking and listening skills outside of class hours with native English speakers. Each volunteer supports one learner by meeting weekly with her/him for two hours to converse and share stories, experiences and beliefs, while practicing both English and Spanish speaking and listening skills.

Providence After School Alliance (PASA)

PASA is a nonprofit that oversees a system of quality after-school programs for middle school youth throughout Providence. PASA’s mission to expand and improve after-school opportunities for the youth of Providence by organizing a system of after-school supports to ensure access for all Providence youth to high quality after-school programs and learning opportunities. Providence College works with the North End/East Side AfterZone, a program that provides homework help, educational games and enrichment opportunities for students. PC works particularly with Esek Hopkins and Times2 Academy.

PAUL CUFFEE CHARTER SCHOOL

The Paul Cuffee Charter School is a public maritime charter school for Providence children in kindergarten through grade seven. The school is growing one grade per year until the first class of seniors graduates in 2011. The school’s mission is to increase the diversity of Providence students pursuing scientific and technical careers through high quality academic and maritime training for students from predominantly minority and low income families. Paul Cuffee runs an after-school program for 100 children in grades K-5. Children do their homework for the first hour of the program, followed by an hour of enrichment activities such as sports, cooking, or leadership club.

PROJECT HOPE

Project Hope/Proyecto Esperanza is a Catholic social service agency of the Diocese of Providence located in Central Falls . It serves a diverse, mostly Hispanic, population through ESL and citizenship classes, Interfaith Dire Emergency assistance (for utilities, prescriptions), immigration services, and other seasonal programs.

SAN MIGUEL SCHOOL

The San Miguel School of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, is a small alternative middle school for 5-8th grade boys. The school mainly serves boys from low-income families in the West End of Providence. The school offers a very structured but caring environment where each student is able to flourish intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Besides a traditional course offering, the school provides an after school program two days each week and a summer camp, Camp Miguel during the month of July. Volunteers will tutor students during the after school Scholar’s Club and help with the after-school sports program.

SMITH HILL LIBRARY

The Smith Hill Library is a local branch of the Providence Public Library system. It is located in the heart of Smith Hill and serves as an unofficial hub for community activity, particularly for children living in the neighborhood. The library is a place where children and other community members can gather together to work on community-based projects. Students support the library’s after school activities and tutoring programs.

SOUTHSIDE COMMUNITY LAND TRUST

The Southside Community Land Trust was created in 1981 to provide members of the community with a place where they can rediscover and learn about their relationship to nature. Today, the Land Trust encompasses 14 community gardens serving approximately 200 families, an extensive school-based environmental education program and City Farm - a certified organic farm. SCLT strives to promote community gardening, to facilitate environmental education and to act as a catalyst for other community needs.

Times2 Academy is a K-12 school that focuses on Engineering, Mathematics, Science and Technology. Their mission is to address the critical state and national need for equitable representation of African-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans in careers in mathematics, engineering and science. Established in 1976, this charter school is supported by the Providence Public Schools and features a learning environment where students are introduced to challenging real-world applications of engineering, mathematics, science, and technology in order to develop and nurture their interest in related careers and academically prepare them for college. Times 2 Academy offers many after-school programs, enrichment opportunities and Saturday Academies. Additionally, the students use the laboratory facilities at Providence College .

YOUTH PRIDE, INC.

Youth Pride , Inc. is the only non-profit organization in Rhode Island dedicated to meeting the social, emotional, and educational needs of young people impacted by sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. YPI provides direct support including a drop-in center, food pantry, academic tutoring, family counseling, and crisis intervention, as well as educational programs, workshops, and trainings. YPI sees youth development, leadership and organizing as fundamental elements to all successful youth work and hopes to create safe and empowering spaces for all youth.
