Making a Difference in Smith Hill
About MAD: Providence College students enrolled in the Philanthropy course offered by the Department of Public and Community Service Studies are looking to positively impact the Smith Hill community. Provided with a $15,000 grant from the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund and Campus Compact, students will have the opportunity to learn about the charitable giving process while making a difference to the community in which they live and learn. Termed the Making a Difference Fund (MAD), students of the 2009 Philanthropy course have carried on the careful research and planning of the 2008 Philanthropy course by prioritizing three needs in the Smith Hill community: after-school programs, affordable housing, and healthcare. Acting as the board of directors for MAD, students will distribute the funds in the form of small grants to community-based non-profit organizations that benefit residents of Smith Hill.
Grant Recipients for Spring 2009 are:
Elmhurst Clean and Green
The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence
Mary House Ministries
