Biology Seminar Series - Dr. Kate Moran

Description:	The Arctic Ocean & Earth's Climate System. Dr. Moran, professor of Oceanography and Ocean Engineering at URI, co-led an expedition to obtain core sediments from beneath the Arctic Ocean in 2004 that resulted in a transformational understanding of earth's climate back to 56 million years ago, the last time that massive amounts of greenhouse gases were released into the atmosphere. The cores contain evidence that, at that time, tropical ferns and algae grew on the ocean surface. She will explain how scientists learn about past climates, and how that information is being used to understand present day climate change, as well as its implications for the future. Dr. Kate Moran has a joint appointment: she is Professor of Oceanography and Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island and she is currently spearheading a research initiative on Offshore Renewable Energy. Dr. Moran's talk will illustrate how scientists learn about past climates and how that information is being used to in our understanding of present day climate change, as well as its implications for the future.
