History of Elmhurst

Elmhurst Home

Located on the northwest side of Providence, Elmhurst remains one of the most stable and secure neighborhoods in the city.  Many handsome and picturesque single-, two-, and three-family homes, built during the turn of the century, lend character and charm to the area.

Surrounded by highly rated schools, Elmhurst is especially attractive to families.  St. Pius, a Dominican elementary school, offers pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and is noted for its quality education, active CYO, and PTO.  The Kennedy and Camden Avenue schools offer grades K through six.  One of the top-rated middle schools in the city, Nathanael Greene,  is located in Elmhurst and features magnet and gifted programs.  LaSalle Academy, a Christian Brothers high school, also offers an enrichment program for talented seventh- and eighth-graders.  During the academic year, Providence College partners with these schools by coordinating and implementing educational, computer, after school, and mentoring programs.

Many homes in Elmhurst offer spacious living accommodations and large lots.  Multifamily properties generate attractive incomes from the built-in student rental market.  Two-family properties yield an annual income of approximately $6,000 or more, while three-family homes generate $12,000 plus.

Proximity to interstate highways and bus lines,  highly rated local restaurants, hospitals, park and recreational facilities, Providence Place mall, the convention and civic centers, as well as to libraries and local colleges and universities, make Elmhurst a desirable urban setting for those who work in the city or commute.
