EDU 450-STUDENT TEACHING IN THE SECONDARY SCHOOL

Seminar meeting time: Wednesday 4:00-5:00
Course Description: Teacher candidates will student teach full-time for a minimum of 12 weeks in a subject area classroom. During the 12 week experience, teacher candidates will assume responsibility for teaching their cooperating teacher’s classes. Weekly seminars will be conducted each Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:00 pm .
Course Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, teacher candidates will have demonstrated their ability to meet the Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards.

Attendance: Teacher candidates are required to attend their student teaching assignments and the seminars. The procedure outlined for absences in the Student Teaching Handbook must be followed. All absences must be made up. An extension of the 12 week requirement may be necessary.
Activities: Teacher candidates are required to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate an integrated unit that is at least 10 lessons in length. As part of this unit, students are required to follow a minimum of 2 students and conduct formal and informal assessments of their progress toward meeting lesson and unit objectives as well as analysis of next steps. The unit must include evidence of student progress. Requirements of the unit are provided in the Student Teacher Handbook. RIBTS 1, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,11
Teacher candidates will conduct a case study of two of their students to learn about their students in depth and to develop instruction or instructional recommendations that meet their students’ needs. RIBTS 1, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,11
Teacher candidates will prepare a description of the community, school, classes and the curriculum they will teach. RIBTS 1, 2, 3,4,10
Teacher candidates will videotape one of their lessons. RIBTS 1, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,11

Evaluation: Both formal and informal evaluations of the teacher candidate will occur:
Formal Evaluation:
Midterm-The evaluation form in the student teacher handbook will be completed independently by the cooperating teacher and the teacher candidate. These will be discussed collaboratively. The college supervisor will review and discuss the evaluation with both the teacher candidate and the cooperation teacher (p. 12-14 of the Student Teaching Handbook).
Final-The student teacher evaluation form in the Student Teacher Handbook will be completed independently by the cooperating teacher. One copy of the cooperating teacher’s completed form will be sent to the Education Department Office. One copy will be given to the student teacher to place in his/her portfolio. The college supervisor will review the final evaluation with both the cooperating teacher and the teacher candidate.
Informal Evaluation:
The cooperating teacher will provide feedback, evaluation, assessment and guidance on a regular basis. Some written feedback will be given to the teacher candidate at least once a week. A minimum of two of these evaluations will be completed using the form on page 33 of the Student Teacher Handbook. The college supervisor will observe a minimum of three (3) times and will provide teacher candidates with both oral and written feedback following each visit.
