Students in the Elementary/Special Education program complete two student teaching experiences in order to qualify for dual certification. Each session is 8 weeks long and requires the submission of a student teaching portfolio.
Course Description: EDU 451: Student Teaching in the Elementary School, 6 credits Student teachers complete student teaching on the elementary level under the joint supervision of a cooperating teacher and a College supervisor in the school systems of Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts communities. Placements include grades 1-6.
Course Description: EDU 452: Student Teaching in Elementary/Special Education, 6 credits Student teachers complete student teaching in a special education setting, grades K-8, under the joint supervision of a cooperating teacher and a College supervisor in the school systems of Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts communities.
Attendance: Teacher candidates are required to attend their student teaching assignments daily and their supervisor's seminars. All absences must be made up. (Athletes may require an extension of their placements due to athletic commitments.) Evaluation: The supervisor and cooperating teacher conduct at least three formal observations of the student teacher during the eight weeks. A mid-term evaluation is completed by the cooperating teacher and shared with the student and the supervisor. A final evaluation is completed by the cooperating teacher shared with the student and supervisor, and sent to the Education Office.
