Urban Action
Urban Action
Urban Action helps improve the community beyond the borders of the Providence College campus while giving incoming freshmen a sample of Providence College’s commitment to community service. Founded by PC students, the program began in 1991 with 17 students volunteering. Urban Action projects now involve approximately 170 freshman students in major community improvement projects each year, with many returning in subsequent years as leaders.
Since 1991, nearly 2,300 freshmen have donated thousands of volunteer hours on community improvement projects including digging trenches for the city to lay electric lines for a midnight community sports league, clearing and preparing a spot for the Smith Hill Community Center’s outdoor performance center and park, and painting the entire gymnasium of a local elementary school. Urban Action also runs community-building projects year-round for all interested students.
In 2002, Urban Action was honored with a Silver Seal of Excellence award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), which recognized Urban Action as a model program for student involvement.
