Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies
The Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies is located in the former Aquinas Chapel and opened in September 2006. Administratively, the center serves under the auspices of the Office of Mission and Ministry and, in collaboration with the Office of the Chaplain/Campus Ministry, it assists in coordinating the collegewide process of maintaining, enhancing, and promoting the distinctive mission of Providence College as a Catholic and Dominican college. Believing that we are called to be transformed so that we may transform society, the center serves as a place of intellectual exploration and dialogue where students, faculty, staff, administration, and alumni can gather for study, discussion, reflection, and service.

Through a variety of events and educational opportunities for the College community, the center strives to share the richness and diversity of the Catholic and Dominican intellectual and spiritual traditions, which offer crucial perspectives for today’s challenges and concerns and invite us together to partake of and benefit from a common mission inspired by faith and enabled by grace.

For more information, contact the director of the Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies, Rev. Thomas D. McGonigle, O.P., at (401) 865-2342 or at tmcgonig@providence.edu.

Two of the labs—Accinno 101 and Howley 312—are open for students on a walk-in basis and may not be reserved by faculty. The remainder of the labs may be reserved but are open to students when classes are not being held. Class schedules are posted on the doors of these labs.

The College, which upgrades hardware and software regularly, provides help to students, faculty, and staff with computer problems by means of a staffed Help Desk, as well as telephone and e-mail support at (401) 865-HELP (4357) or

The Personal Counseling Center supports the mission of the College community by contributing to the personal development of undergraduate students. The center provides a safety net for students who may be dealing with stress, conflict, or other personal problems resulting in depression, confusion, anxiety, and anger. The center offers individual counseling to students with developmental issues, situational crises, or long-standing interpersonal problems. In addition, the center makes available a wide range of resources including self-help literature, workshops, counseling/support groups, as well as crisis intervention and assistance with substance abuse. All services are confidential within the limits of the law and ethics. If a student’s counseling needs are long term, or for any other reason it is deemed appropriate, the center will refer a student to a professional and/or agency outside the College community.

The Personal Counseling Center is located in the lower level of Bedford Hall. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Thursday evenings until 8:00.

Access to the garage is gained from Cumberland Street. A gate-arm mechanism allows drivers both access to and egress from the service road that leads to and from the garage. The garage is lit, has closed-circuit surveillance cameras and a campus telephone, and is patrolled by campus security officers in vehicles and on foot.

Student Health Center
In order to treat most illnesses and accident-related injuries, the College maintains a Student Health Center. On call are two physicians, who work on a part-time basis, six registered nurses, and 10 emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Sick call hours are held daily at 9:00 a.m., when a doctor is available to see and examine students referred by a staff nurse. A GYN Clinic is held weekly by appointment.

In addition to the above services, the Student Health Center provides relevant health and wellness programming including educational/informational workshops and screenings on nutrition, physical activity, alcohol and other drug use, tobacco, stress, and general wellness.

The center provides laboratory services but does not provide x-ray or surgical services, treatment for major illnesses, or allergy shots. The center refers students who need those services to a local hospital or physician and students assume financial responsibility for those services.

The center is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. during the academic year. Health services are suspended during Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and spring recesses.

For detailed information on services and mandatory student health records for incoming students or to schedule an appointment, call the Student Health Center at (401) 865-2422 or click on > Student Life > Services for Students > Health Center on the PC Web site.
