Academic Services
The Office of Academic Services (OAS) at Providence College is dedicated to fostering academic excellence and to helping students prepare to become responsible and productive citizens.

The OAS offers group workshops devoted to academic topics as well as individual academic mentoring and consultation. The OAS’s Tutorial Center, nationally certified by the College Reading & Learning Association, provides individual and group tutoring sessions in most subject areas, including the Development of Western Civilization. The OAS’s Writing Center, known as “The Write Place,” uses specially trained peer tutors to help students become better writers. The assistant director for disability services helps students with documented disabilities (learning, psychiatric, physical, medical) by arranging for reasonable academic accommodations and by coordinating individualized services for students.

The OAS also serves as a clearinghouse for the various departmental help sessions that are offered on campus. Friar student-athletes can take advantage of all services offered to the general student population as well as special services just for athletes, such as the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.

For more information on any of the programs listed above or for a schedule of upcoming workshops or departmental help sessions, contact the Office of Academic Services at (401) 865-2494 or click on Academics > Undergraduate Studies > Office of Academic Services on the PC Web site.

Balfour Center for Multicultural Affairs
The Balfour Center for Multicultural Affairs is a supportive environment and a “home away from home” for students from all ethnic backgrounds. The center promotes cultural awareness and appreciation and respect for individuals of diverse ethnic origins through educational programming, community outreach, and student support services. The center supports peer and alumni mentoring programs and maintains a lending library on various aspects of multicultural life for academic or personal use. The center also offers a speakers bureau and is a source for information about scholarships available to students of color.

For more information, contact Dr. Edward Twyman, dean of the Balfour Center for Multicultural Affairs, at (401) 865-1525 or

Undeclared Advising Program
Providence College’s Undeclared Advising Program is for students who have not yet declared a major. Students work with specially selected faculty advisors, who help them explore academic options and ease the transition to the right major. Faculty members from nearly all academic departments serve as academic advisors—the foundation for the program. Their advice is supplemented with targeted seminars and workshops to help students select a suitable major. The program has been recognized by the National Academic Advising Association.

For more information, contact Dr. Carol B. Crafts, director of the Undeclared Advising Program, at (401) 865-2438 or at ccrafts@providence.edu, or click on Academics > Undergraduate Studies > Undeclared Advising on the PC Web site.
