School Year Academic Internships
Eligibility Before considering an academic internship course, consult with your academic advisor to be certain that an internship is suited to your program of study. Typically juniors and seniors in good academic standing are eligible to register for academic internship courses. Academic internship courses run for one semester and offer three credit hours.
Internship Courses & Faculty Internship Contacts: Internship course descriptions are available in the online course bulletin available at www.providence.edu. Specific guidelines regarding student eligibility, course registration, prerequisites, faculty supervision, grading, pay for internships and deadlines vary by academic department/program. To learn about these guidelines and to obtain internship site approval, be in touch with the faculty internship contact from the department or program most closely aligned to your internship interest. If you are uncertain about which department/program to work with, contact the college internship coordinator in the Office of Career Services for assistance.

Internship Site Approval & Course Registration: Students are responsible for making all arrangements for academic credit in advance of the start of the internship. This includes site development and approval. Once you have secured an internship you must have the academic department/program approve your selection of the site. In addition, all academic internships require timely course registration. Please consult the academic department/program or the college internship coordinator regarding the appropriate internship course number for registration.
Supervision/Academic Requirements: All students participating in academic internships have both a faculty supervisor and a site supervisor. The academic department/program will assign or assist you in the selection of a faculty supervisor. The faculty supervisor oversees the academic requirements of your internship and the site supervisor oversees your work at the internship site. Both the faculty and site supervisors will evaluate your performance in the internship. The time commitment of an academic internship usually involves 8-12 hours per week at the site throughout the 15 week semester. In addition to your site hours, some internship courses require weekly seminar attendance. Those departments/programs that do not offer a seminar will conduct the internship/field course tutorial style, where the student intern and faculty supervisor agree on a method of interaction/communication throughout the semester. The academic requirements of an internship course vary by department/program but typically include: reflection journals, papers, readings, etc.
Learning Agreement Form/Deadline: The Learning Agreement form offers a description of the internship, learning objectives, responsibilities of site supervisor and academic requirements. This form is to be completed by you, the student, in consultation with both your faculty and site supervisors. All original Learning Agreement forms are to be submitted to the college interns hip coordinator within 2 weeks of the start of the interns hip but no later than the 3rd Friday of the semester of registration. The Learning Agreement is available online at www.providence.edu/career under the Forms section.
Site Evaluation: Students undertaking academic internships are required to complete and submit the Site Feedback Form for Academic Internships/Field Experiences. This form is sent directly to students registered for academic internship/field courses after mid-semester and specifies a reply deadline.
Summer Academic Internships
ELIGIBILITY: Junior or senior level status is typically required to register for summer academic internships.
ADVISEMENT: (1) All students interested in pursuing summer academic internship credit must meet with the college internship coordinator in the Office of Career Services to review procedures and to obtain the Summer Learning Agreement for Internships & Field Experiences form. (2) All students must obtain summer course approval from their class dean in Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies.
SUPERVISION: A member of the college faculty must agree to serve as the Internship Faculty Supervisor throughout the term of the internship. It is the responsibility of the student to secure a faculty member from a department related to the internship to serve as their Internship Faculty Supervisor. Students who are having difficulty securing an Internship Faculty Supervisor should consult with the college internship coordinator or your class dean in Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies for assistance.
REGISTRATION & PAYMENT: Registration and payment for summer academic internships is processed via the School of Continuing Education in Harkins 102. Students will be charged the SCE 3-credit course rate.
LEARNING AGREEMENT FORM: Students are required to complete and submit the Summer Learning Agreement for Internships/Field Experiences form (available from the College Internship Coordinator only). The Learning Agreement should be completed with the assistance of the Internship Faculty Supervisor and the Internship Site Supervisor. The Learning Agreement for Internships and Field Experiences MUST be completed and submitted to the college internship coordinator within 2 weeks of the start of the summer internship.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: All arrangements for summer academic internship courses must be made no later than the start of the 2nd SCE Summer Session.
NOTE: Certain Academic Departments/Programs may approve fall semester registration for internships that occur in the summer months. The majority of academic requirements for the internship must occur during the term of registration, fall, and not in advance. Faculty supervision in such circumstances begins with the start of the internship in the summer and continues through the following fall semester. All such arrangements must be made in advance of the start of the summer internship and the Learning Agreement for Internships and Field Experiences MUST be completed and submitted within 2 weeks of the start of the summer internship. In such cases, the student does not register through SCE. Permission must be granted by the academic department/program.
