Class of 2009

Congratulations to the Class of 2009!

Due to the unprecedented economic situation, many of you are still in the process of looking for jobs - please take heart, you are not alone. While the job market is challenging right now, it does not mean that employers are not hiring. To be competitive, you will have to be persistent, motivated and focused. There are several strategies and resources for you to use. We have provided our suggestions for you on this page.

Good Luck with your future endeavors,
The Office of Career Services

Develop a plan for your search

Use all available resources and be as diversified in your strategy as possible. Take the time to reflect on your skills and investigate those jobs and sectors where your skills best mesh with an employer’s needs.

  • Keirsey Temperament Sorter

  • Career Interests Game

Prepare your elevator pitch

You never know when you will have the opportunity to speak with someone who can help you. Know how to deliver a short narrative about yourself and what you are looking to do.

Network

Increasingly jobs are acquired through networking; this has never more true than in a tight economy. Network with your parents’ friends, your friends’ parents, and, especially with PC Alums. Develop your network and always ask for the names of others who they would recommend that you speak with.

Identify your top prospects and research those companies. Then, conduct informational interviews with anyone who is doing what you think you might want to do. You can gain deep insight into different sectors and get yourself in front of hiring managers. Always ask for advice and send a thank you note after each informational interview.

  • PC Alumni Online Community
Once you register you can search this database of alumni to identify individuals that you would like to speak with in order to receive career information and advice.
  • PC Alumni Events
Attending events can provide opportunities to visit with old friends while meeting new people; they are great ways to network in person.
  • LinkedIn
Consider creating a professional profile to use for networking with individuals in a career of interest to you. Note:If you haven't already done so, visit your Facebook and/or MySpace account and be sure it is professional - it is not a myth, employers really do check candidates' profiles on Facebook and MySpace!

Be flexible

In this economy, it is critical for you to be as flexible as possible in both type of job and geographical location. Hiring in certain sectors is down by as much as 70% and hiring in the Northeast is down 40%. Consider:

  • smaller, non-traditional and start up employers. Many new jobs are found in smaller companies who use just in time hiring instead of cycles which align with the academic year.
  • opportunities that will help you get your foot in the door or acquire the skills or contacts needed for when the economy turns. These opportunities include internships, temporary or contract work, graduate education, experience abroad or specialized training or certification.
  • looking into the federal government. Due to retirements and the Federal Stimulus package, the government sector is actively hiring. Visit websites such as Making the Difference  and USA Jobs  for information and job opportunities in the federal government.
  • join a service program such as Americorps and Peace Corps to gain experience.
  • volunteering. This can be a great way to gain experience while being exposed to different career paths. Visit: Corporation for National and Community ServiceVolunteerMatch, or Volunteering in America  for details on volunteering.
