You never know when you will have the opportunity to speak with someone who can help you. Know how to deliver a short narrative about yourself and what you are looking to do.
Increasingly jobs are acquired through networking; this has never more true than in a tight economy. Network with your parents’ friends, your friends’ parents, and, especially with PC Alums. Develop your network and always ask for the names of others who they would recommend that you speak with.
Identify your top prospects and research those companies. Then, conduct informational interviews with anyone who is doing what you think you might want to do. You can gain deep insight into different sectors and get yourself in front of hiring managers. Always ask for advice and send a thank you note after each informational interview.

In this economy, it is critical for you to be as flexible as possible in both type of job and geographical location. Hiring in certain sectors is down by as much as 70% and hiring in the Northeast is down 40%. Consider:
-
smaller, non-traditional and start up employers. Many new jobs are found in smaller companies who use just in time hiring instead of cycles which align with the academic year.
-
opportunities that will help you get your foot in the door or acquire the skills or contacts needed for when the economy turns. These opportunities include internships, temporary or contract work, graduate education, experience abroad or specialized training or certification.
-
