Providence, R.I.--Three Providence College distance runners earned All-America honors after their performances at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet was held at Texas A&M University on March 13 and 14.
Danette Doetzel '09 of Macklin, Saskatchewan, Canada, earned her honor after finishing fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16.00.45. This caps a successful season for Doetzel, who also was named an All-American in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
On February 22, Doetzel was victorious in the 3,000-meter run at the BIG EAST Championship in New York City. She finished second in the same race at the ECAC Championship at Northeastern University on March 9.
On the men's side, David McCarthy '11 of Waterford, Ireland, and Hayden McLaren '10 of Christchurch, New Zealand, also earned All-America honors after their runs at the NCAA meet.
McCarthy placed fourth with a time of 4:02.24 and McLaren finished in fifth place with a time of 4:02.51.
McCarthy was named USTFCCCA Northeast Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year for his performance this season. In addition to his performance at the national meet, McCarthy won the 3,000-meter race at the BIG EAST Championship and ran the mile at the Boston University Valentine Invitational in a time of 3:57.75--the third-fastest time in College history.
At the BIG EAST Championship on February 22, McLaren captured the 1,000-meter title with a time of 2:22.05. On February 14 at the Valentine Invitational, he ran the mile in a time of 3:57.78--the fourth-fastest time in PC history.
