Spring 2006

Dr. Hackey presented a paper on "The Crisis of Caregiving" that explores competing explanations for the nursing shortage in America at the annual meeting of the New York State Political Science Association in New York, NY on April 20-21. He also chaired a session on public participation in the policy process at the conference.

HPM faculty and students worked with local churches and senior centers to help senior citizens understand the new Medicare Part D drug benefit and choose plans that fit their needs during the spring semester.

The program's inaugural Health Policy Forum attracted more than 100 alumni, area health professionals, and HPM students to Slavin '64 Hall on January 26th. Planning has already begun for next year's event.

The program welcomed Michael Tauber, JD as an instructor for the required health law course this spring. Mr. Tauber is a partner with Hinckley, Allen and Synder in Providence, where he represents a wide range of clients in the health care industry.

Fall 2005

This fall, the program commenced a national search for a new tenure track faculty position. A review of applications began in October. The program invited four candidates to campus for interviews, and we hope to make recommendations to Academic Administration before the Christmas break. Students  met prospective candidates and attended public presentations by all applicants in November and December of 2005.

All seniors in the class of 2006 were invited to a casual brunch at Dr. Hackey's home in Wakefield in September. More than 20 students and faculty enjoyed a relaxing brunch and good conversation to start the academic year! This event will become an annual tradition in the program.

In the fall of 2005, the program welcomed Lou Pugliese as an instructor for HPM 323, Administration of the Extended Care Facilty. Mr. Pugliese has an extensive background in health care administration, and has mentored many HPM students in his role as director of quality improvement at Eleanor Slater Hospital. We are thrilled to have him with us! The program was also pleased to welcome back Kaitlyn Kenney '02 as an instructor in HPM 201 this fall.

In October, Dr. Hackey presented a paper entitled "Condition Critical: Framing the Malpractice Crisis in America" to the annual meeting of the New England Popular Culture Association in Fairfield, CT.

On November 2nd, the program hosted its fall alumni career forum, and welcomed back Nora Kilkelly '04, Rachel McNamara '05, Zach McBride '05, Mike O'Callahan '05, and Kara Sawyer '05 to a packed room in Slavin Center.

The program was pleased to host its second mock interviewing session with representatives from Meditech. Brenda Santos '03 joined Meditech recruiters Laura Wilkinson and Greg Clarkin in conducting mock interviews for HPM sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Students enjoyed a light dinner and a chance to receive candid feedback on their resumes and interviewing skills.
