Admissions Requirements and Procedures

The Providence College School of Continuing Education affords an individual the opportunity of a college education at a variety of levels: as a degree candidate; as a nondegree candidate, taking courses that can be applied to a degree candidacy at a later time; or as an auditor, taking courses solely for personal enrichment.

Students enrolled in credit-earning courses in the School of Continuing Education, including those in a nondegree status, are expected to hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Exceptions can be made only with the approval of the School of Continuing Education Dean.

Note: No student who has been dismissed or placed on academic probation at another collegiate institution or by the Providence College Undergraduate School is eligible for immediate admittance to a degree program in the School of Continuing Education. At least one full academic year must elapse before such a student will be considered for admission, during which time the student must complete one semester at the School of Continuing Education as a nondegree student with a grade point average of 2.0 or better.

Admission to Degree and Certificate Programs

Students who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree, or certificate program must submit a   Formal Application Form  which is also available in the School of Continuing Education office. The applicant should also request a personal interview with one of the deans or advisors to plan his or her program.

Acceptance into a degree-status or certificate program requires the high school diploma (or GED) plus the transfer of satisfactory academic credits the student may have earned at an accredited college/university, and approval by the Dean of the School of Continuing Education.

Students must submit the application and a nonrefundable application fee of $55 to the School of Continuing Education, Providence College, Providence, RI 02918-0001. Students should request an official copy of their secondary school transcript, as well as official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions they have attended, and have them sent directly to the Continuing Education office.

Note:  No application is required for the CORE program.

Nondegree (ND) Status

The designation nondegree/ND indicates that the student is registered in class work but has not completed the requirements for degree candidacy (see above). All applicable credits earned in the non-degree category may be applied toward degree requirements at such time as the student wishes to become an accepted candidate.

Transfer of Credits

The minimum requirement for a bachelor’s degree is 114 Credit Hours (CH) of work in approved courses. Transfer students must take 39 CH (13 classes), in the School of Continuing Education at Providence College.

Courses (but not grades) up to 75 CH for a baccalaureate degree,  36 CH for an associate's degree,  and six to nine credit hours for a certificate -- from any accredited institution of higher learning, including Providence College Undergraduate (Day) School--can be accepted when the courses comply with the curriculum the student wishes to pursue. CLEP credits and ACE / PONSI credits are included in this total. For transfer, these courses must carry a grade of "C" or better. This office will consider transcripts from professional schools and institutions, accredited in their professions, if the student has completed an entire program at that institution.

Transfer credits are generally those taken prior to matriculation as a degree candidate in School of Continuing Education. CLEP credits may be generated at any time, provided that the student seeks prior approval and that additional CLEP credits do not exceed the total of 75 transfer credits.

CLEP

As a special form of transfer credit, students seeking admission to the School of Continuing Education, as well as current students, may receive credits from the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), with a grade of 75 percent or higher (equivalent of a C+ level score) and prior approval of a School of Continuing Education advisor. The School of Continuing Education requires that students take the "with essay" version of CLEP tests offering that option. General and subject test and schedule information, as well as registration forms, is available in the School of Continuing Education office, Harkins Hall Room 102.

ACE/PONSI

The School of Continuing Education also recognizes and accepts, when appropriate, credit recommendations attached to military training and experience as well as corporate training programs. Please consult an advisor for additional information.
