HISTORIC BUILDINGS OF PROVIDENCE COLLEGE

Exhibit Dates: September 8, 2009 – December 15, 2009

Description: The display highlights the founding of Harkins Hall, and the early days of Dominic and Martin Halls through original photographs.   On October 9, 1915 Bishop Matthew Harkins noted that “The need of a college, catholic in spirit and under catholic auspices, is most evident, considering especially the steady growth in the number of the inhabitants of the diocese during the last twenty years.”  Four years later on September 19, 1919 with the dedication of Harkins Hall taking place, Bishop Harkins dream was made a reality.

Further photographs chronicle Martin Hall, once known as Guzman Hall, and Dominic Hall, which is now the home of the President of Providence College.   In addition to these images dating back to 1919, the display includes architectural drawings of the proposed 1934 library building in the gothic style that was never built
