1.  Who is the typical student in the School of Continuing Education?

Although students from many backgrounds and areas attend PC’s School of Continuing Education, the “typical” student is 25-35 years old, employed, may have a family, takes two courses per semester on average, transfers in some courses from other colleges, and lives within 20 miles of the campus.

2.  Which programs does the SCE offer?

The School of Continuing Education offers bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, and certificate programs.  The SCE Catalog contains a complete list of degree and certificate programs. (SCE Catalog )

3.  When are classes offered / scheduled?

The Access Schedule provides for classes offered in a variety of formats.  Semester classes meet once per week for 2.5 hours each week.  Term courses meet twice per week for 7.5 weeks.  All classes are held in the evenings, with start times at 4:30pm and 7:00pm .  We also offer some Saturday morning classes.    Distance Learning classes are offered via the Internet, and run on a semester schedule.  SCE also offers Winter Session and Summer Session courses.  (Registration – Course Dates)

5.  Is financial aid available for adult students?

Many SCE students receive financial aid, in the form of federal or state grants, loans, and SCE scholarship assistance.  The “Financial Aid” brochure in our informational packet provides details.   (Financial Aid )

6.  Can I meet with an advisor to evaluate my transfer credits?

We encourage you to call for an advising appointment to discuss transfer credit acceptance, your program plans, course selection, and other areas of interest. (Administration and Staff; SCE EmailTransfer Credit)    

7.  How long will it take for me to complete a bachelor’s degree?

The timeframe for completion depends on several factors, particularly  the requirements of the program you are in, the number of transfer credits brought in, and the number of courses you complete per semester.  Some students complete their bachelor’s degree in 2-4 years, and others take more time. 8.  Are there any support services for adult students at Providence College ?

Providence College SCE provides free academic advising, limited career advising, tutorial services through the Office of Academic Services, and disability support services via the OAS.  The College also provides access to computer labs, the library, dining facilities, parking, etc.   ( Library, OAS, Office of Safety & Security )

9.  Does SCE offer graduate courses?

The graduate studies division at P.C. is separate from the School of Continuing EducationSCE offers undergraduate courses in the late afternoons, evenings, and weekends.  ( Graduate Studies )

10.  What is the general education core curriculum in the School of Continuing  Education ?

The core in the SCE is comprised of 57 credit hours of courses in the liberal arts, including English, theology, philosophy, science, fine arts, etc.   All students earning a baccalaureate degree are required to fulfill the core requirement through transfer courses or those taken at P.C.  Students have a great deal of choice in selecting the specific courses within each general education area.   (SCE Catalog – page 28, Core Requirements)

11.  Will I receive a standard Providence College diploma upon graduation?

Yes.  All students graduating from Providence College (day school, SCE, or graduate studies) receive the same diploma, with the respective dean’s signature on the diploma.

12.  Will my degree requirements from the School of Continuing Education be the same as those required in the P.C. day school?   

In cases where SCE and the PC day school offer the same major/program (for example, Accountancy, History), the degree requirements are identical, with the exception of the core / general education requirements.  SCE also offers several degrees that are unique to the evening school, such as Liberal Studies, Business Administration, and Ministry.  The diploma is the same, as above; the student’s transcript indicates in which division the degree was obtained.
