Teaching Philosophy
Teaching is the profession I have actively pursued for years with all my heart. In my opinion, being an effective teacher means to have mastered subject matter, and to add to information values such that the learned knowledge is paired with wisdom.
It is well accepted that hands-on research is a necessity for the students at the college level, and laboratory practice is often an untapped and eagerly awaited attraction for biology students. Therefore, my belief remains that it would be always beneficial to involve students in laboratory-based research.
Research & Interests
Dr. Wan has conducted breakthrough dermatological research on the effects of ultraviolet radiation on skin aging and skin cancer. He has also collaborated with others to research immunotherapy as a way to enhance an individual’s ability to fight cancer. His interests include cell signaling from receptor activation to transcription factor regulation. Using cultured cell lines, he conducts cellular and molecular investigations on the effects of environmental factors such as UV and arsenite on apoptosis or unwanted growth/development. Undergraduate research opportunities exist in his laboratory.
