Interviewing

Whether you're planning on interviewing for an entry-level job, internship, campus club, or something entirely different, The Office of Career Services can help.

We offer many services to assist students including Quick Question hours, interview skills workshops, mock interviewing, a selection of interview skills books and "How To" packets for both internship and entry-level job interviewing.

Interview Tips
  • Be ready to discuss your career interests, strengths, and achievements, and how they relate to the position you're applying for. Review our section on Knowing Yourself and complete assessment exercises available in our Internship Interview packet. This will help you articulate the skills and strengths you have developed through classes, activities and work experiences.
  • Prepare 5-8 stories about yourself to demonstrate your strenghts and achievements. Your stories should follow the PAR formula:
P - What was the problem you faced?
         A - What action(s) did you take?
R - What were the results?
  • Understand the career field you're applying for. Refer to our Researching Careers page, our Career Links page, and books in our career library for helpful career information resources.
  • Develop a basic understanding of the employer and industry by thoroughly reviewing the employer's website and position description.
  • Dress in a polished, professional manner in appropriate business or business causal attire.
  • Be enthusiastic, maintain good eye contact and speak with a clear, strong voice.  Demonstrate a willingness and aptitude to learn.
  • Turn off your cell phone.
  • Prepare questions to ask.
  • Send a thank you note or email, and follow up as appropriate to determine your status in the hiring process.
