CEL Report on Collaborative Teaching
The Committee for the Enhancement of Learning—charged with identifying and recommending initiatives for effective pedagogical approaches, and committed to working with faculty members to cultivate an institutional climate which promotes excellence in student learning—set out on a two-year study to develop a new initiative for collaborative teaching at Providence College . The CEL's methodology included:
- Research of educational studies published on collaborative teaching
- Comparative study and analysis of 19 colleges / universities and their policies on collaborative teaching
- Surveys of faculty and students at Providence College
- Assessment of collaborative teaching currently existing at Providence College
- Committee consultation with: Dr. Hugh Lena, Vice President, Academic Affairs; Chuck Haberle, Assistant Vice President, Academic Affairs; Fr. Mark Nowel, O.P., Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Chair, Committee on Studies; and Dr. Tom King, Chair, Academic Affairs I of Faculty Senate
- Attention to the mission statements of Providence College and the Office of Academic Affairs, as well as Goal 11 of the 2000 Strategic Plan, which articulate respectively commitments "to fostering academic excellence through the sciences and humanities (through) ... a variety of opportunities … in a supportive environment,” to "promote academic … excellence; provide effective support for faculty … to conduct the instructional and research programs of the College … define the characteristics of the education provided: intellectually probing, ethically centered, socially and morally aware, broad-ranging in its study of the liberal arts, and respectful of human diversity and experience,” and "to explore new opportunities for team, interdisciplinary, and intradisciplinary teaching.”
